Finland is well known for being a den of fertility when it comes to extreme sonic filth, so it's time to introduce you to Scythrow, a band that was unearthed in 2020 from the rotting tombs of Lappeenranta.
Although Scythrow are a new band, they have just released their third album, entitled "Blameless Severed Extremities", which was released in CD format by Awakening Records, soon will be released by Murder Records in Cassette format and later will be released also by Futhark Records in Vinyl format.
Although Scythrow's first two albums present a sound more directed towards Thrash Metal, this new work defines very well the type of sound that Scythrow intends to propagate and where they finally found the cadaveric formula that allows them to present a more cohesive sound within the parameters of chaotic brutality.
So let's get on with the interview that follows, where I had the pleasure of speaking with the rotten brothers from Scythrow and they will reveal to us a little more about Scythrow. Chaos & Death On... Normal Life Off...
C.N. - HELL-o impure corpses, I would like to welcome Scythrow to the filthy graveyard of Murder Records and I would like to start this interview by asking you to introduce us and tell us how the band became to the Underground morgue?
SCYTHROW - Salutations! We are a four-piece Death Metal maniac band from the rotten fields of Lappeenranta in Finland. We got introduced to Death Metal in the year 2023 and since then it has been unrelenting onslaught.
C.N. - Can you introduce the other members of the band and give a little more information about the role each one plays in the band?
SCYTHROW - The four members of Scythrow are Markus Erling on Guitar and Vocals, Arttu Muukkonen on Guitar and Vocals, Nuutti Myllynen on Bass and Vocals and Benjamin Niemelä on Drums.
C.N. - Scythrow's sound has undergone changes since the band's beginnings until today. What were the reasons that led you to make these changes? Do you think the musical influences of the band members have had an important role in the evolution of Scythrow's current sound?
SCYTHROW - We expanded our options and found our place in the gruesome world of Death Metal and started developing our sound towards that. We take a lot of influence from many other bands as can be seen through our music.
C.N. - In 2021 you presented your first album entitled "Paragon of Pain" and which was released independently. What do you want to tell us about this album where we can find a very different sound from what the band currently presents?
SCYTHROW - We don't recognize the sound of our first album as the one we would like to represent and we don't recommend expecting more of the same kind of music in the future.
C.N. - In 2023 the band returned to the studio this time to record the second album entitled "Scorched Earth" and where we can see that the band's musical progress was heading towards something more intense and heavy although the Thrash Metal aspects that define your first album are still very prominent. What do you want to tell us about this second album?
SCYTHROW - We feel the same way about our second full-length release as the debut. Even though it was the stepping stone towards the brutal sound we are thought of today, we don't find it that important to us.
C.N. - It was still the year 2023 and you returned to the studio to record another EP entitled "Envy Is The Filth Of The Soul" and which would be released in CD format by Brutal Cave Productions in Portugal and independently in Cassette format. This EP was also where you began to define your sound in the Death Metal aspects, what can you tell us about this EP?
SCYTHROW - The EP was in a way a promotion of our newest release "Blameless Severed Extremities". We had our chance to show everyone what we are about, so it's an important release to us.
C.N. - Although you are a relatively new band, you have just released your third album, which shows that you are very active. Would you like to talk a little more about your latest album, entitled "Blameless Severed Extremities", which was released on CD by Awakening Records in China, on Cassette by Tape Eater Records in Italy and will now also be released by Murder Records in the Netherlands. What can you tell us about this album and how do you think it is being received by the cadaverous underground community?
SCYTHROW - "Blameless Severed Extremities" has been our greatest success yet and we have received much praise for our hard work, which we appreciate greatly. The first cassette release was a flop and never really happened, but this collab will be one to remember. Also a 12'' LP press of the release can be expected via Futhark Records in late spring of 2025.
C.N. - How do you define the band's sound and what are your main influences? What message does the band want to convey with its lyrics and sound?
SCYTHROW - As previously mentioned, a significant influence of bands such as Convulse, 200 Stab Wounds, Morbific and Mortician for example can be found in the sound of Scythrow. Our band doesn't have a specific message for the fans, we just like expressing ourselves through the rough and raw airwaves of Death Metal.
C.N. - How would you describe the band's live performance? What can fans who want to see your concert, what they can expect from Scythrow on stage?
SCYTHROW - Our live shows are most often total orderly morbid chaos. Scythrow gigs are the perfect option for the fans aching for an energetic and communal atmosphere.
C.N. - How do you see the Underground nowadays, full of digital modernity and which in a way allows bands to spread their sound and message, however, the current digital tsunami can also simply harm good bands that end up going unnoticed and not given the due value. How do you see the Underground nowadays?
SCYTHROW - There are a lot of new bands rising through the masses and it's great that new music is much easier to record and release independently. Keeping up the tradition of physical releases is maintaining the soul of music production and especially in the death metal scene we think it's critical.
C.N. - Many bands of extreme quality emerge from Finland and for me it is one of the countries where you can find very interesting projects. What bands do you suggest we listen to and get to know in the Finnish Underground?
SCYTHROW - To get to know the Finnish death metal underground of today, for example we recommend bands such as Morbific, Cadaveric Incubator, Devil's Vomit and Goatburner.
C.N. - Before finishing this interview, I would like to ask you to tell us a little more about Scythrow's goals and plans for the future?
SCYTHROW - More releases and gigs can be expected. We're willing to go play abroad but this year we haven't planned on anything yet.
C.N. - We have reached the end of this interview and I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and for letting us know Scythrow a little better. Now I would like to leave this space open so that you can say anything that you consider relevant and that was not covered in this interview, and you can thank or tell whoever you want to fuck off.
SCYTHROW - We want to give our thanks for this interview and all the maniacs who have supported us with our new release. See you in the cemetery!
